Want the local lowdown on K’gari? Swing by a Visitor Information Centre and have a yarn with someone who knows this place like the back of their sandy hand.
Roll onto a beach highway and into another world. K’gari (pronounced “Gurri”) is a living, breathing wonderland of ancient rainforest, freshwater lakes, shifting dunes and iconic wildlife. All stitched together by a deep spiritual connection to Country. Tour by 4WD, paddle its creeks, soar above on a scenic flight, set sail, or walk through the heart of it all on the 90km K’gari Great Walk.
Love a good off-road trip? Cruise the length of 75 Mile Beach, where the Maheno Shipwreck rusts into the sand, coloured cliffs dazzle at The Pinnacles, and Champagne Pools fizz like a natural spa. Float down Eli Creek with your sunnies on and worries off, or hike inland to the pure, rain-filled Lake McKenzie (its white silica shores are otherworldly).
The stars steal the show after sunset, unless you’re at Kingfisher Bay Resort. Then it’s Illumina lighting up the bush in brilliant style. Queensland’s first permanent nature-based light show turns the trees into storytellers with Butchulla lore, soundscapes and light projections.
Looking for something few others get to see? Join a tour to K’gari’s remote west coast, where still waters mirror the sky and wildlife sightings are next-level. From July to November this is humpback whale HQ, where they rest and play with their calves in the calm waters of Hervey Bay.
Whether you’re camping under the stars, drifting through rainforest creeks, or learning stories older than the sand beneath your feet, K’gari will leave its mark. The kind that stays with you long after the sand’s washed off.
