Want the local goss on Great Keppel? Swing by a Visitor Information Centre and have a yarn with someone who knows this place like the back of their sandy hand.
Whether you're here for a lazy-day beach hop or a big hike and snorkel sesh, Great Keppel (Wop-pa) Island has you covered, with 17 beaches to choose from and plenty of wild tucked in between.
Wander Long Beach’s squeaky-clean sands, snorkel with turtles at Monkey Beach, or find your own private patch of paradise at Butterfish Bay. Want to earn your lunch? Hike to Mount Wyndham for sweeping island views, or tackle the full-day Lighthouse Walk. Along the way, you’ll spot native wildlife, learn about the island’s rich Aboriginal heritage, and probably meet a friendly goanna or two.
The fringing reef is right off the sand, just grab a mask and dive in. Want to explore other islands and secret coves? Boat tours are your ticket to adventure. Prefer staying dry? Glass-bottom boats, kayaks and boom-netting adventures are all in easy reach. And if you time it right (June to October), you’ll be sharing the sea with humpback whales on their east-coast cruise.
Whether you're here for a day or staying longer, Great Keppel Island is made for slow mornings, salty swims, and sunset drinks with sand between your toes. It’s refreshingly real, and ridiculously relaxing.
Getting here is a breeze. Just hop on the 30-minute ferry from Rosslyn Bay (near Yeppoon), and you’ll be in holiday mode before you finish your coffee. Rockhampton’s your transport hub, with flights, buses and trains connecting you to the coast.
