In a world of bustling tourist destinations and crowded vacation spots, the Torres Strait is an undiscovered treat for couples looking for a unique getaway with soul. Nestled in the far north of Queensland, this cluster of islands brims with not only breathtaking rustic beauty but an aura of adventure and a rich local culture that makes it anything but generic.

Why the Torres Strait?

The Torres Strait is a region that adventurous couples looking for an experience out of the ordinary should put on their radar. Its untamed natural beauty is a far cry from your typical tourist traps: a dreamy backdrop that's nothing short of breathtaking, and just a little wild. It’s sleepy, yes, but, there’s no shortage of things to do in the Torres Strait, whether you're a thrill-seeking active couple or prefer to yarn with locals and simply immerse in your surroundings.

Getting there and getting around

Torres Strait Tours

To reach the Torres Strait, you'll typically start your journey by flying into Cairns, Queensland. Several airlines operate regular flights to Horn Island, or another option is to catch a ferry over from Cape York, the gateway to the Torres Strait at the very tip of the mainland.

Once you've arrived in the Torres Strait, you can explore the different islands by ferry or small plane. Make sure to plan your inter-island transport in advance to really make the most of your time.

If you opt to make Cape York your jumping-off point, this Indigenous, community-owned eco-lodge offers a unique blend of luxury and adventure. Nestled in the heart of the Cape York Peninsula, the lodge is enveloped by untouched wilderness that's perfect for a romantic retreat.

Spend your time fishing for snapper or giant trevally, wandering historical World War II ruins, touring Friday Island’s pearl farms, or taking a day trip to Pajinka (the very tip of Cape York) before indulging in locally sourced produce in the lush garden by the pool.

Grand Hotel Thursday Island

Located on Thursday Island, this historic hotel blends modern amenities and local charm, with a side of mesmerising harbour views. Situated on the foreshore of Thursday Island, dine alfresco on the deck and gaze out to Endeavour Strait, Horn Island, and Prince of Wales Island, with the Cape York Peninsula in the distance.

Roko Island

For a more rustic experience, consider Roko Island which lies about 20 minutes from Cape York, or one hour from Thursday Island by boat. Once a working pearl farm, this private island paradise now offers eco-friendly glamping options. It doesn’t get much more romantic than browsing unique White South Sea Pearl jewellery straight from the source before dining by firelight on the beachfront, toes in the sand.

Island Villas

Island Villas is the only 4-star boutique self-catered accommodation on Thursday Island, with five properties set amid landscaped gardens overlooking the azure waters of the Endeavour Strait and spectacular sunset views.

For lunch or dinner, the Torres Hotel is Australia’s northernmost pub, just a short walk from the town centre and your go-to for hearty meals, friendly service, and lively drinks.

Looking for a unique culinary experience? A short boat ride from T.I. is Kazu Pearl Farm on Friday Island, where the fish – and even pearl shell meat – is caught fresh off the wharf and served with Japanese finesse. Tip: Book in advance for a private tour around the pearl farm.
