Old Jail

Get in touch

Come down and check out what it would have been like to be ‘locked up’ for crimes committed back in the day at Thargomindah's Old Jail!

In 1897, there were many staff at the Police Station: one Sub Inspector, one Acting Sergeant, three Constables, one Native Tracker, and 18 horses!

With this many officers, Thargomindah was in need of a new Jail, and in 1930 the Old Jail was constructed using cypress pine with a galvanised iron roof and lined with hardwood.

With its hardwood walls and high windows, it remains an example of the less sophisticated and modern architecture that was so prevalent in the West.

The Old Jail is free to enter at any time for you to revel in the policing history. While you're there, get your photo taken in the funny photo board at the front of the jail.
