Artesian baths & hot springs | Cosmos Centre | Local tips | When to go
Ready to swap crowded beaches for wide open skies and steamy artesian baths? This 3-day itinerary takes you from Cunnamulla to Quilpie, through some of the quirkiest, most welcoming country towns you’ll ever visit. Along the way, you’ll meet larrikins, soak in ancient underground waters, spot rare wildlife, and stare deep into the stars.
This is no ordinary road trip, it’s a wild, warm-hearted journey through the soul of southwest Queensland. Let's hit the road.
If your idea of adventure involves open roads, friendly locals and a few surprises along the way, you’re in the right place.

Quilpie, Outback Queensland
Fly or drive into Cunnamulla, 800km west of Brisbane. First stop? Snap a photo with the bronze statue of the famous Cunnamulla Fella, immortalised in song by Slim Dusty and pop into the Visitor Centre to get your bearings.
You're standing on one of the world’s largest underground water sources: the Great Artesian Basin. It’s been keeping this region alive for millions of years. Learn more at the Visitor Centre or, better yet, feel it for yourself.

Cunnamulla Hot Springs, Cunnamulla, Outback Queensland
Time to unwind! The recently opened Cunnamulla Hot Springs tap directly into the ancient artesian waters of the Basin. Sink into the warm pools, take in the desert landscape and let the mineral-rich water work its magic. It’s the Outback’s version of a day spa - no fluffy robes, just pure relaxation.
Pick up lunch from the local bakery and wander down to the river.
Stroll the Warrego River Walk
Paddle, fish or yabby your afternoon away
Bird nerd? Don’t miss Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary, just 16km west
Wind down your first day at Charlotte Plains, a working sheep station with an unforgettable artesian bath set under the sky. Book a tour of the historic woolshed, soak at sunset, and fall asleep to the sounds of the bush.
Set off early and roll into Charleville, the heart of Outback Queensland. First stop? Heinemanns Bakery for a hot pie worth writing home about.
This isn’t just a museum; it’s an interactive experience that shows how the Royal Flying Doctor Service has kept remote Queenslanders safe for nearly a century. It's inspiring, informative and full of feel-good Outback spirit.
Meet Australia’s cutest marsupial at the Charleville Bilby Experience. It’s run by passionate locals protecting this endangered icon. Entry fees and souvenir sales go straight into conservation - feel-good travel at its best.
During WWII, Charleville played host to the US Army Air Forces - and you can still visit the secret base! Join the WWII Secret Base Tour and hear stories you won’t find in history books.

This is where your jaw officially drops. The Charleville Cosmos Centre offers one of the most unforgettable astronomy experiences in Australia. Peer through Meade telescopes to see solar flares, nebulae and distant galaxies. Book the Big Sky Observatory session or explore Indigenous sky stories on the Universal Dreaming tour.

Your final day takes you west to Quilpie, famous for boulder opals and peaceful river scenes. Head to the town fossicking site or try your luck at the Toompine opal fields—you don’t need a permit for public areas.
Forget the idea that Outback = dry. This tranquil river is lined with shady trees and native plants (all helpfully signed). Find a spot to relax or throw in a line.
Take the short, steep track to the top of this rocky outcrop just outside town. From here, the Outback glows gold as the sun sets over the plains. It’s the perfect finale to your red-dirt adventure.
BYO stubby cooler - no one likes a warm drink in the bush
Pies from Heinemanns Bakery = best road trip fuel
Pack for all weather- cool nights, warm days
Hot tip: Book your Cosmos Centre session in advance, it’s popular!
Best time to visit: April–October (cooler days, cosy nights)
