One Day on K'gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) is a self-drive itinerary visiting many of the best sites K'gari has to offer such as Wangoolba Creek Walk, Central Station, Eurong, 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck, Coloured Sands and Lake McKenzie.

This is the adventure of a lifetime for anyone who has not yet visited Fraser Island and a welcome visit for any returning visitors. K'gari is a world apart from anything you have seen before and will not disappoint.

Visit World Heritage listed K'gari to explore the forests, streams and open beaches of this amazing island. Experience the thrill of driving on the islands sand roads and beach highway. Be amazed by the scale of the islands forests and the clarity of the water in it's streams. Escape to a natural world like any you have seen before and relax in its serenity.

River Heads to Wangoolba Creek

Approximately a 45 minute drive from Hervey Bay to the River Heads barge departure point.

Follow Elizabeth St. south going past the airport turning left into River Heads Road.

Depart River Heads 8:30 - Arrive Wanggoolba Creek Approximately 09:15

It is a 45 minute Journey across the Great Sandy Straits to Fraser Island. On your way over to keep an eye open for Dolphins Turtle and Dugongs, and During whale season the odd Humpback Whale may make its way down this far into the Great Sandy Straits..

Wanggoolba Creek to Central Station

You will need to engage 4 wheel drive at this point.

Take the inland track for 8km to Wanggoolba Creek and Central Station car park.

Once a forest camp for the loggers on K'gari, now days a day picnic area, and one of the island most beautiful walks, along the banks of Wanggoolba Creek. Starting as a freshwater spring and making its way to the barge landing.

Central Station through to Eastern Beach

From Central station travel about 9km due east, through the rainforest and then through the Eucalypt forest before making your way to the Township of Eurong, home of Eurong Beach Resort, and a coffee and Pie stop, before you embark on your beach journey.

This is a good place to purchase refreshments or snacks for the rest of the journey and to have a break from the sometimes lumpy inland tracks before heading out onto the beach highway with it's 80 kilometres an hour speed limit.

75 Mile Beach

From Eurong Head out onto the Eastern Beach and travel north for around 32 kilometres. Depending on the tides, you may have to use a couple of the bypass tracks at Poyungan Rocks and at Yidney Rocks.

Sites along the way include Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck and the Coloured sands, but keeping your eyes on the lookout for Sharks and dolphins and during the season the mighty Humpback Whale.

You will also pass the township of Happy Valley just in off the beach where food fuel and drinks are available if needed.

75 Mile Beach to Lake McKenzie

Head back south along the beach to Eurong (32 kilometres) and turn in land and follow the tracks to Lake McKenzie (13.5 kilometres), stopping of at Pile Valley to see some of the biggest Satinay trees on the island.

Then onto the beautiful blue waters of Lake McKenzie, one of the islands many lakes perched high up in the sand mountains and surrounded by forest. It is a beautiful spot to swim and relax on the white sand beach.

Lake McKenzie to Kingfisher Bay Resort

Drive back downhill through eucalypt forest to Kingfisher Bay Resort to meet the barge back to River Heads. Grab a drink in the beach side bar while you wait for the barge and depending on the time of day you might see a beautiful sunset. Tyres need to be pumped up again at this point as you leave the sand.
