When preparing for your Gold Coast getaway, it’s important to have all the right gear so you can make the most of the vibrant coastal region.

There are places to explore around every corner, such as waterways, walking trails and local shops and eateries, and it’s a good idea to be prepared so you don’t miss a thing.

This Gold Coast packing guide and has everything you need to make the most of your Gold Coast holiday.

Beach time

Burleigh Heads beach surfers SUP | Gold Coast packing guide

Relaxing on a golden stretch of sand to the tune of crashing waves is synonymous with the Gold Coast.

Besides your swimwear, towel and thongs, it’s important to pack plenty of protective gear so your skin doesn't burn under the harsh (but glorious!) Queensland sun. Make sure to bring sunscreen (waterproof and SPF 50+ is best for optimum protection), a hat with a floppy edge or a distinct visor, and sunglasses to keep yourself protected.

If you can’t find a shady spot under the palms to set up base, bring along a pop-up beach tent. Not only will this create a barrier between you and the UV rays, but it will also provide a bit of privacy for you and your belongings.

If you want to jump from one beach to the next, this handy guide to the Gold Coast’s best beaches will help you come up with a hit list.

Note: if you’re travelling with kids, bring along some boogie boards to surf the waves and buckets and spades to make sandcastles.

Exploring the wilderness

The Tree Top Walk at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat | Gold Coast packing guide

A trip to the Gold Coast hinterland is a must-do while on your getaway; this stunning green wonderland, bursting with mountains, waterfalls and villages, lies beyond the iconic beaches the Gold Coast is most famous for.

Whether you plan to venture through Mount Tamborine, take on a section of the 54-kilometre Great Walk or go on a smaller trek at one of these hiking trails, there are some key items you’ll need for your time among the trees and leaves.

Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes that won’t start giving you blisters 10 minutes into your adventure, and breathable exercise gear for when you break a sweat. A hat and sunglasses are also important to protect your skin and eyes from the bright sunshine.

A water bottle is also a must—filled to the brim (and packed with ice if you can) to stay hydrated. High-energy snacks to keep you going are also a great idea; think bananas, muesli bars and trail mix.

Last but not least, pack your swimmers and towel in case you find a creek, river or waterhole to take a refreshing dip in. A pair of water shoes will also come in handy, as they’ll protect your feet from the ground’s surface, which may be rough.

Eating out

When you hit the streets for a mouthwatering meal at one of the Gold Coast’s best restaurants, you’ll need to wear something that consists of more than just your swimmers.

While the Gold Coast has a decidedly laid-back vibe, packing a cover up for when you’re eating out after the beach or if you’re grabbing a takeaway for your riverside picnic will stand you in good stead. If wining and dining is on the cards, bring along some dressier clothes (and shoes) for the occasion.

Shopping local

Save room in your suitcase and shop for a stylish souvenir while on the coast.

Markets are a great spot for picking up a unique gift. Miami Marketta (open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) and Burleigh Heads’ The Village Markets (open once a month) are two excellent options. To have more markets on your radar, read our Gold Coast markets guide.

If you want to shop in air-conditioned comfort, head to Pacific Fair Shopping Centre. Here you’ll find over 400 stores ranging from luxury and iconic global brands to leading Australian retailers. When you get hungry, indulge in a hearty meal at one of the many onsite restaurants.

When it’s time to shop up a storm, ensure you have plenty of reusable bags, your wallet and an observant eye to spot those one-of-a-kind items.
