The Stinson Walk is one of Australia's iconic hikes! Recount Australian history and celebrate the life of Bernard O’Reilly, who heroically saved the lives of two plane crash survivors 81 years ago in World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park.
During a stormy afternoon on 19 February, 1937, the Stinson airliner on route from Brisbane to Sydney crashed into the Lamington Ranges killing four of the seven passengers on board, sparking a search that failed to turn up any wreckage.
Ten days later, Bernard O'Reilly set out on foot to find the Stinson wreckage. He managed to find the crash site and to his surprise, two survivors in desperate need of medical attention.
To commemorate the historic aviation event, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat offers two rewarding routes (37 and 16 kilometres) to retrace Bernard’s footsteps through the rugged McPherson Range to the famed Stinson crash site. Note private groups are also welcome.
The 2018 guided Stinson hike experiences will be hosted from May 11-13 and August 10-12 and further information including the fitness prerequisites can be found on the web site.
