Located just off the Bunya Highway in the South Burnett region, near Lake Barambah and the Bjelke Petersen Dam, Cherbourg is home to one of Queensland's largest Aboriginal communities. Established in the early twentieth century, it is the oldest and largest former government settlement in the state. Today, Cherbourg is primarily home to people of the Wakka Wakka and Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal language groups.
Visitors are welcome to begin their visit at the Cherbourg Visitor Information Centre, which is set on a hill overlooking Lake Barambah. The centre features picnic and barbecue areas with lake views and offers a range of locally made Aboriginal souvenirs, artworks, and craft pieces.
A key place to visit is the Ration Shed Museum, where visitors can gain a deeper understanding of life in Cherbourg, past and present. Through archival film footage, photographs, historical documents, and recorded stories from community Elders, the museum shares important insights into the experiences, resilience, and history of the local Aboriginal community.
