Moonie may be tiny in size, but it proudly wears the title of Queensland's oil capital. Sitting at the crossroads of the Moonie Highway and Leichhardt Way, this small outback settlement is the site of Australia's first commercial oil field. Established in 1961, the oil operation is still running today and remains a fascinating part of the town's story.

And then there is racing, Moonie style. Each March, the town bursts into life for the famous Moonie Yabbie Races, a delightfully quirky country event billed as the race that stops the outback. Run by the Moonie Sports Club, this much loved celebration draws crowds for a day of laughs, friendly competition, and classic country camaraderie.

For such a small town, Moonie delivers big character. With its unique history, welcoming locals, and one of the most unusual race days you will ever witness, Moonie proves that the outback knows how to put on a memorable show.
