Begin your nature discovery amongst the stunning flora at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens. Weave your way through more than three kilometres of trails, unique gardens and wetlands, offering a mix of Australian native and exotic international plants. The garden also includes a lot of native birds - perfect to spot for birdwatchers to visit.

More than 350 bird species have been identified in the Mackay Region, and a great place to see a selection of shorebird species is on the Bluewater Trail, at the Sandfly Creek wetlands.

Another leisurely walk can be taken at North Mackay’s Gooseponds, where a selection of water birds can be viewed.

Continue to North Mackay towards Slade Point to reach the Kommo Toera Trail, a walk through wetlands and Melaleuca Rainforest.

Helpful hint: take a good supply of insect repellent with you, and apply liberally before commencing the walk. The trail is one kilometre in length, but can take an hour to complete at a leisurely pace, taking in the sights along the journey. A wonderland for discovering a unique combination of flora and fauna.

Continue your drive to Slade Point, and take a stroll along the golden sand of Lambert’s Beach. The Slade Point Nature Reserve stretches 73 hectares and conserves one of the last remaining areas of coastal dunes and paperbark wetlands in the Mackay region.
