Hinterland Loop Day Trip

This is a great day out visiting a variety of awesome local sites, attractions and businesses. Overall the loop is around 105 kms in total making this an easy drive and an interesting insight into sites not usually on the main tourist trails.

The loop is a circuit, visiting seaside villages of Toogoom and Burrum Heads, driving through mixed farmland and rural communities, visit historical houses like the historical Brooklyn House in Howard. Also on route is Bambooland Nursery & Parklands where you can walk among amazingly tall stands of bamboo set out in a park like area.

On the return journey drop into Australiana Cottage Crafts and Herbs to pick up a locally made souvenir.

Full Itinerary

Hervey Bay to Toogoom

Take Boat Harbour Drive north towards Eli Waters and turn right onto Pialba-Burrum Heads Road and drive for around 15 kms then turn right to Toogoom. Follow this road until you come to the boat ramp where you will find a couple of very good cafes for breakfast. At high tide the view across the water is a nice addition as Beelbi Creek meets the sea.

Toogoom to Burrum Heads

After Toogoom continue your journey back out to Pialba-Burrum Heads Road and turn right to the small village of Burrum Heads for a spot of fishing or just relax in the shade of the trees at the park next to the boat ramp.

The park area next to the boat ramp has shady trees, picnic shelters and free electric barbeques if you would like to break your journey here for an early lunch or to wet a line fishing in the estuary.

Burrum Heads to Howard

Continue on your journey to the small town of Howard to visit a stately home built for a pioneer of the area's coal mining history at Brooklyn House (you may need to book a tour ahead of time). The old Queenslander style home is lovingly cared for and includes furniture and collectibles reflecting the rich history of the era.

Lunch in a local pub such as Howards Grand Hotel or the Miners Arms in nearby Torbanlea where friendly locals will spin you a yarn or two.

Howard to Bamboo Land

Next stop is just down the road at Bambooland Nursery and Parklands near Torbanlea where you will discover everything bamboo from 30 metre tall stands shadowing the driveway and walkways, elegant lawns, wonderful gingers and other exotic plants.

Follow William St North West out to the Bruce Highway, turn left towards Maryborough and then after just over two kms take a right hand turn off the highway onto Burrum River Rd. After 600 metres turn right again then follow the road briefly before turning left until you come to Old Coach Rd where you turn right and follow for one km until you arrive at Bamboo Land.

The small shop sells a variety of bamboo products, furniture and giftware. Pick up some new plants for your garden before you leave.

Bamboo Land to Hervey Bay

Travelling back along Torbanlea-Pialba Road make a short stop at Australiana Cottage Crafts & Herbs with the ‘pink cow’ out front. Inside awaits an array of hand made craft items and herb farm. From Bamboo Land it is about 21 kms.

This is one of Australia’s leading Art and Craft Galleries and the Herb Farm specialises in old fashioned and forgotten culinary, medicinal and fragrant herbs. (closed on Wednesdays). The next leg into Hervey Bay is about 18 kms.
