Capricorn Caves

Just 30 minutes north of Rockhampton, the Capricorn Caves boasts stunning rock formations, cave networks and their inhabitants, and fossils of creatures from lifetimes ago. These spectacular caves date back 390 million years ago when the sedimentary limestone rock originated under the sea as coral growing in shallow waters. These days the caves are open to adventure caving, abseiling, climbing and a high ropes course with accommodation options.

Rockhampton Heritage Village

Be prepared to step back in time at the Rockhampton Heritage Village, which is located just south from the Capricorn Caves along the Bruce Highway. This museum tells the tale of the Rockhampton district between 1850 and 1950. View vintage vehicles, a hall of clocks, timber cutters camp, a blacksmith shop, homesteads and cottages, vintage machinery and a range of friendly farm animals.

Dreamtime Cultural Centre

Just a few minutes away, you'll stumble across the 12 hectares of landscaped gardens which are the centrepiece of the Dreamtime Cultural Centre. The Vanishing Culture of the Sandstone Belt - a stunning 34-metre display of recreated sandstone caves not only entertains but also educates on the environment of the Central Queensland Sandstone Belt. Also portrayed are the traditional Aboriginal people of this area, the early days of the Aboriginal mythology, and the significance of Kenniff's cave, being both the history of Aboriginal occupation in Australia and the early history of cattle-duffing in the region.

Mount Archer

Impressive, wide open views spanning across the region can be seen at the award winning Nurim Circuit Elevated Boardwalk at Mount Archer National Park. The circuit extends 25 metres outwards, 7.5 metres high and incorporates interpretive signage of the local Darumbal culture.

Riverfront Precinct

Riverside Park sits on the banks of the Fitzroy River in historic Quay Street and is a lovely place to stretch the legs, or have a leisurely barbecue. Riverside is home to many of Queensland’s best maintained and finest heritage buildings.

Zoo and Botanical Gardens

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens are amongst the oldest public gardens in Queensland. Entry to the gardens and zoo is free. It is home to over 50 species of native animals from across Australia and exotic animals from around the world! Its the perfect place for families to see animals in their natural surroundings. The Gardens Tearooms is the café nestled under the 150 year old Banyan Figs

Yeppoon and Capricorn Coast

An outing to the coast is the perfect day trip from Rockhampton! Yeppoon is situated only 38 kilometres north east of Rockhampton and is the gateway to the Capricorn Coast and the wonders of the Southern Great Barrier Reef and Keppel Bay Islands. Wander along the town’s picturesque esplanade with its backdrop of offshore islands. Gaze at the sparkling azure sea and soak up the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere as you let the kids play in the amazing free lagoon pool. If you love art, check out the vibrant street art that you can find throughout the community.

Byfield Rainforest

Just 25 minutes north from Yeppoon, you can discover the lush rainforests of Byfield and spectacular scenery of the surrounding parks and forests. Breathe in pure rainforest air, relax in rainforest cabins, or pitch a tent alongside a flowing fresh water creek. Swim, kayak and explore the artisan crafts at Nob Creek Pottery.

Koorana Crocodile Farm

Choose to return to Rockhampton via Emu Park in the South, and drop into Koorana Crocodile Farm. The excitement of seeing crocodile feeding is something you won't match anywhere. From February to Easter you may also see baby crocs hatch! This is a working crocodile farm open to visitors between 10am and 3pm, with tours at 10.30 a.m. and 1pm. A perfect spot for lunch - crocodile burgers are the house speciality! It's a truly fascinating experience.
