Travel the Mining Trail

Multiple Locations

From heritage-listed pubs to remnants of abandoned gold mining towns, the Isaac Region's mining corridor offers a fascinating treasure-trove of historical destinations.

Head inland on the Peak Downs Highway, where the vivid red soil of the outback contrasts with the ‘black gold’ extracted from the region’s coal mines. The Mining Trail provides an insight into one of Australia’s main export industries while also showcasing some surprisingly scenic vistas.

Mackay to Nebo

Mackay to Mt Britton: Visit the abandoned mining town of Mt Britton, a 35 minute drive north-east of Nebo. Only remnants are left of what was once a thriving gold mining town. The Isaac Regional Council maintains markers on the original streets, and displays historic photographs on information boards to give you a glimpse of the town in the 1880s.

Mt Britton to Lake Elphinstone: Explore further along the Suttor Development Road to Lake Elphinstone, a popular destination for camping, fishing and water sports.

Head back to the Peak Downs Highway and make your way to the historic town of Nebo.

The heritage-listed pub next to Nebo Creek is the ideal location to spend a night or stop for a meal. A walking trail alongside the creek displays information boards to give insight into Nebo's colourful past. The Nebo Museum is also well worth a visit.

Moranbah to Clermont

As you drive toward Clermont, Peak Range National Park is ruggedly beautiful and one of the best locations to witness an intense golden sunset.
Wolfang Peak, at 572 metres, is one of the most popular peaks of the range and takes approximately one hour to summit.

Gold was discovered in Clermont in 1861, and ever since, the town has found prosperity in precious metals, coal and agriculture. However it has also suffered from its fair share of tragedy, including devastating floods.

Visit the Clermont Historical Centre, located two kilometres north of Clermont. It displays more than 8000 artefacts reflecting the dramatic history of the town, from tragedy to prosperity.

Gold fossickers require a Queensland fossicking license and a GPA fossicking kit.

After learning about Clermont’s turbulent history, visit the memorial that marks the height of the 1916 floodwaters on the corner of Capricorn and Drummond Street as well as the iconic 'piano in a tree' across the road from the memorial marker.

20 kilometres south-west of Clermont, discover the oasis in the dessert of Theresa Creek Dam. An angler’s paradise; golden perch, jewfish, barramundi and red claw can all be found. Camping is permitted here for a small fee.

Duaringa

Duaringa, Central Highlands Area
Duaringa is located 107 kilometres west of Rockhampton along the Capricorn Highway. The small town is the essence of a small rural community. Duaringa is the oldest township in Duaringa Shire with buildings dating back to the 1860s and a corner of the local hotel has been preserved to show how early pioneers lived.

Jambin

Jambin, Banana Area
A rural hub with a pub to service weary travellers, Jambin is on the Burnett Highway just south of Smoky Creek. Part of the Callide Valley, the town is wedged between the Callide Creek to the west and the highway to the east, making it a picturesque spot to stop.

Banana

Valentine Plains, Banana Area
Visitors are always a little baffled by the town’s unusual name, particularly as there isn’t a single banana tree in sight. A dun-coloured bullock is responsible for that. A favourite of local stockmen in the 1860s, Banana the bullock, so named for his yellowish colouring, would help herd wild cattle into holding yards.

Goovigen

Goovigen, Banana Area
Goovigen is a small rural village in the region’s northern farming heartland. A short distance north-west of Jambin off the Burnett Highway, fewer than 300 people live in the town. The streets of Goovigen are as neat as a pin and the heritage buildings have been either restored to their former glory or updated for present needs.

Wowan

Wowan, Banana Area
In its heyday, Wowan was the dairy capital of the region. With more than 600 farmers on the job, the Dawson Valley Dairy Cooperative was topped up daily with fresh supplies of full cream milk, ready to ship off to towns and cities as far away as England.

Baralaba

Baralaba, Banana Area
Old fashioned values and friendly townsfolk are the hallmarks of Baralaba. Those traits and a stubborn streak for sticking around. More than a century of economic upheaval has threatened the town on many an occasion, but Baralaba locals are a stoic lot.

Theodore

Theodore, Banana Area
Theodore is located on the Dawson River 105 kilometres south west of Biloela. From its earliest days, Theodore was a stopping point for travellers and the same is true today. A pretty place, Theodore is shaped like a point between the Dawson River and Castle Creek, its palm lined streets give a tropical feel to the place.

Dululu

Dululu, Banana Area
The northern most town in the Banana region, Dululu is a junction point that divides the two southern arterials, Burnett Highway (A3) to the east and the Leichhardt Highway (A5) to the west. Both highways reveal untold adventures and this rural village is the start of them all – a launching pad to the region and perfect place to stop, rest and make your touring plans.

Mount Scoria Conservation Park

Thangool, Banana Area
