The Abbey Medieval Festival is the premier annual event in the Moreton Bay Region, which focuses on an accurate depiction of life in the medieval period.
Each year 30,000 visitors converge on the site to enjoy this spectacular event. The festival allows visitors to become immersed in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of life during this period. Participants come from all over Australia and New Zealand; these include re-enactors, exhibitors, musicians, street performers and stall holders.
In 2017 over a thousand re-enactors converged representing different time periods and regions, each displaying traditional skills and crafts associated with their groups.
The festival begins with banquets, a knighting ceremony, and expands into the week-end of jousting, falconry, feasting, song and dance. The event caters for visitors of all ages; suggested itineraries for families with children are outlined on the website. The festival has been successfully run by the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology for the past 28 years. The museum has been a major cultural icon in the Moreton Bay Region since 1986.
