Bicton Hill Circuit Track

Mission Beach, Cassowary Coast Area

The track begins on Bicton Hill's exposed eastern side, where sturdy trees such as brush box and swamp mahogany grow. Climbing steadily, the track circles around to the hill's sheltered western side, which supports one of Australia's few remaining examples of lowland rainforest. The circuit leads to a lookout at the summit then loops back around to join the original track to return to the car park. Cyclone Yasi damaged much of the canopy along the track, there is little shade along the way. Carry water, wear hats and sunscreen and avoid walking the in the midday heat.

Enjoy spectacular mainland and island views from the lookout. Birdwatching is rewarding. Watch for buff-breasted paradise kingfishers and, occasionally, endangered southern cassowaries. Along the walking track look for rainforest skinks, lace monitors and also the brilliant blue Ulysses butterfly.
