Surrounded by extensive fringing reefs, the five islands of Frankland Group National Park feature rocky outcrops, dense rainforest, mangroves and coastal vegetation, making them a haven for wildlife. A colony of spectacled flying-foxes roosts on Russell Island, while manta rays and sea turtles have been spotted in nearby waters, part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Eubenangee Swamp National Park

Eubenangee Swamp, an important wetland in the coastal lowlands between Ingham and Cairns, is a birdwatchers' paradise. Over 190 species of birds have been recorded here. Sitting below the Bellenden Ker Range (the wettest part of Australia), much of this park is flooded during the wet season.

Millstream Falls

Millstream Falls is reputedly Australia's widest single-drop waterfall. The falls flow over the edge of a columnar basalt lava flow, a legacy of the Atherton Tableland's volcanic past. Millstream Falls National Park is on the western edge of the World Heritage Area.

Kareeya power station was commissioned in 1999, and was developed in line with principles of environmentally sustainable development. Its location at Lake Koombooloomba in Far North Queensland's Wet Tropics World Heritage Area finally put into use infrastructure established when the dam was constructed in 1960.
