However, what it lacks in looks it makes up for with bucket-loads of personality. The Maori wrasse is an inquisitive fish that often approaches divers and snorkellers – don’t be surprised if you find one following you around like a faithful friend.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhere to see them:\u003C/strong\u003E You’ll find them in abundance at Reefworld, a pontoon permanently moored at \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://www.queensland.com/attraction/hardy-reef\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003EHardy Reef\u003C/a\u003E in the outer reef beyond the \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://www.queensland.com/explore-queensland/the-whitsundays/places-to-visit/whitsunday-islands\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003EWhitsunday Islands\u003C/a\u003E. Bait Reef, the closest of the Whitsundays’ outer reef locations, is home to a large Maori wrasse named Wally; Elvis is the resident at Hayman Island’s \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://www.queensland.com/attraction/blue-pearl-bay\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003EBlue Pearl Bay\u003C/a\u003E.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Ch2\u003E5. Cod Hole is a famous dive spot at The Ribbons and the name pretty much gives it away – this is a prime location to see groups of giant potato cod. This magnificent grey-brown cod species can grow to two metres in length and weigh in at 100 kilograms. They’re not only impressive in size but also extremely friendly, and will follow divers around like puppies.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhere to see them:\u003C/strong\u003E \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://www.queensland.com/attraction/cod-hole-dive-site\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003ECod Hole\u003C/a\u003E, Ribbon Reefs, near Lizard Island.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Ch2\u003E6. With such a diverse population, it’s possible to enjoy a variety of shark experiences, from spotting plankton-guzzling whale sharks to diving and snorkelling alongside white-tip and black-tip reef sharks, which are typically harmless to humans.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhere to see them:\u003C/strong\u003E White-tip and black-tip reef sharks are commonly seen at Bait Reef, an outer reef beyond the Whitsunday Islands. Dive with sharks at Osprey Reef, northeast of Port Douglas. From \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://www.queensland.com/destination%20information/rainbow-beach\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003ERainbow Beach\u003C/a\u003E, a three-hour drive north of \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://www.queensland.com/explore-queensland/brisbane\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003EBrisbane\u003C/a\u003E, head to the \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://www.queensland.com/attraction/wolf-rock-dive-site\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003EWolf Rock\u003C/a\u003E dive site, famous for grey nurse sharks. Between November and February, green and loggerhead turtles return there to nest. On the mainland, \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://www.queensland.com/attraction/mon-repos-conservation-park\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003EMon Repos\u003C/a\u003E, near Bundaberg, is the largest loggerhead turtle rookery in the Southern Hemisphere. From September to November, mothers use the calm, protected waters around the township of Hervey Bay to teach their newborn calves survival skills before continuing their migration.
