Looking for an autumn escape? Book a tropical getaway where you can revive mind, body and soul while tuning into the simpler things: pure nature.

Autumn in Cairns is a particularly special time to visit. North Queensland’s ‘endless summer’ continues to deliver comfortably warm weather – but with the bonus of shoulder season prices and crowds.

Nature delivers, too.

Summer rain has worked its magic on the rainforest, bursting with new life like you’ve never seen before. The region’s waterfalls are at their most spectacular while adrenalin-pumping activities and cultural experiences can be found around every corner.

Autumn weather in Cairns

The weather during autumn in Cairns is as you might expect from a tropical destination. Gloriously warm days and balmy evenings, with temperatures averaging 21 – 29°C between March and May. April and May also experience less rainfall, with an average of 13 rainy days in April and 10 in May.

If you happen to catch a little wet weather, don’t stress – at this time of year showers can pass quickly, and there’s plenty to keep you entertained in the meantime.

Ready to witness autumn in Cairns? These are the best things to do while you’re here.

Explore the famous Waterfall Circuit

Ellinjaa Falls, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

Replenished by summer rain, the waterfalls of our tropical north are at their prime this time of year, making autumn in Cairns the perfect time to cool off in wild places.

You’ll find many of the best among the rolling hills and rainforest of Atherton Tablelands. An easy drive from Cairns, the Waterfall Circuit is home to famous swimming spots like Millaa Millaa Falls, Ellinjaa Falls and Zillie Falls, and plenty of hidden gems too. Choose to explore at your own pace following this itinerary, or simply jump on a day tour. Operators such as FNQ Nature Tours and Barefoot Tours offer small group day tours to introduce visitors to the Tablelands’ nature and native wildlife while hopping between swimming spots and iconic sights.

With fewer crowds during shoulder season, you’ll have the space to stay a while, appreciating the sounds of native birds and rushing waters.

Note: always follow safety signage when visiting waterfalls and swimming holes in Queensland.

Tackle raging white waters

Raging Thunder Adventures, Barron River, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

Prefer a few more thrills than floating in natural swimming holes?

Autumn in Cairns is when local rivers are at their peak – and if you’re up for a bit of a challenge and a lot of fun, you can tackle the rapids on a whitewater rafting adventure. Raging Thunder offers half-day rafting tours on the Barron River, and full day excursions to Tully River – both departing Cairns.

Discover mountain bike trails – and major competitions

Smithfield Mountain Bike Park, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is home to some of Australia’s best mountain biking trails, and Smithfield Mountain Bike Trail Park offers 60km of rainforest-clad mecca for riders.

It’s also host to some of the biggest MTB events in the world. Autumn in Cairns is when you can catch the UCI Masters Mountain Bike World Championships (14 - 18 May 2025) along with the return of Crankworx Cairns (20 - 25 May 2025), a huge MTB festival and competition which brings together elite and amateur riders across events like slopestyle, downhill, dual slalom, speed & style and pump track. It’s a blast for spectators too.

Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef

Sunlover Reef Cruises, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

Autumn is great time to dive into the wonder of our Reef, when clear waters and drier weather conditions are ideal for scuba diving and snorkelling adventures.

There are day trips to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns for every adventurer. Jump on board the eco-certified Passions of Paradise catamaran for a day of sailing between the best dive and snorkel sites (where you can get hands on help complete reef health surveys), explore with Indigenous sea rangers on board Dreamtime Dive and Snorkel, spend an exciting day on Sunlover Reef Cruises’ pontoon where you can try a range of water sports, or get off-the-beaten-track in The Frankland Islands.

Note: it’s recommended you wear a protective suit to help shield you from the sun and to minimise the risk of jellyfish stings. Tour companies will provide this gear.

Cruise with culture

Mandingalbay Authentic Indigenous Tours, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

Cruise out into Trinity Inlet as sunset falls over Cairns Harbour for a truly unique ‘Deadly After Dark’ experience with Mandingalbay Authentic Indigenous Tours - a 100% Indigenous owned company that welcomes visitors to Mandingalbay Yidinji country.

Meet the wildlife

Hartley's Crocodile Adventures, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

Autumn is an excellent time of year to meet Cairns' unique critters. From meeting koalas at Wildlife Habitat, to exploring the naturally landscaped Birdworld Kuranda with over 350 birds roaming freely or getting up close with reptiles at Hartley's Crocodile Adventures, it's a wildlife enthusiast's paradise.

Eat local in the Atherton Tablelands

Bretts Outback Tasting Adventures tour, Atherton Tablelands, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

It’s not just natural beauty and wildlife that makes the Atherton Tablelands a must-visit during autumn in Cairns. It’s also bursting with flavour, with farm stores, cafes and restaurants dotted throughout the rolling hills – and freshly picked, sweet tropical produce is in abundance at this time of year.

Start your day with a latte at a local coffee plantation, taste your way through a cheese factory on a working dairy farm, take a tour of a distillery that uses all Aussie ingredients, then settle in for a Devonshire tea beside a spectacular volcanic crater lake.

Party at Port Douglas Carnivale

Port Douglas is just an hour’s drive north of Cairns, and this laidback yet luxurious coastal village is particularly lively during Port Douglas Carnivale. Held on 16 – 25 May 2025, this annual festival is full of flair, with vibrant street parades, decadent long lunches, cabaret shows, a family beach day, pop-up art and big nights out at this year's hottest event, Temple of Fire.

Ride the Skyrail above the treetops

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

Explore the ancient Wet Tropics from new heights on Skyrail Rainforest Cableway – a unique gondola journey with views stretching from the trees out to Cairns’ city and Coral Sea. Along the way, you can hop off at two rainforest stations to explore on foot and get a close-up experience among the trees. Autumn in Cairns often brings a magical mist to the rainforest, and views of Barron Falls (Din Din) at its most powerful is a sight you won’t forget.

Learn Dreamtime legends at Mossman Gorge
