Do I need to plan my trip in advance?

Yes, especially in the Outback. Book accommodation ahead, check road conditions before you leave, and map out your fuel and food stops.

How often should I refuel?

Whenever you can. Even if your tank’s half full, top up at the next roadhouse, petrol stations can be few and far between.

What safety gear should I pack?

At minimum:

• A well-stocked first aid kit

• Plenty of drinking water 

• Sunscreen, hat, and insect repellent

• A spare tyre, jack, and basic tools

If heading into remote areas, also pack a satellite phone or a two-way radio in case you’re out of mobile range.

Is mobile reception available everywhere?

No, many Outback areas have little to no phone coverage. Telstra offers the widest coverage, but for truly remote travel, you’ll need a satellite phone.

What should I know about road safety?

• Drive to the conditions, many roads are unsealed or single-lane bitumen.

• Watch for wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk.

• If you see a road train approaching, pull over and let it pass safely.

What about weather conditions?

Always check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast and road condition reports before setting out.

Do I need a 4WD?

Not for all Outback Queensland routes, many main highways are sealed, but for remote tracks, national parks, or after heavy rain, a high-clearance 4WD is essential.

Anything else I should remember?

• Let someone know your travel plans and expected arrival times.

• Respect local communities and Indigenous lands.

• Take your rubbish with you, leave no trace.
