Fraser Coast Fishing

You won’t have any need for tall tales after casting a line into Fraser Coast’s abundant waters. From stunning sheltered coastline to freshwater rivers and lakes, you can uncover some of the best fishing in Australia and get to know the locals of the amiable seaside villages while you’re at it.

Where to fish on Fraser Coast

Hervey Bay and Fraser Island are blessed with clear waters and a uniquely diverse fishery.

The seemingly endless fishing options include barramundi, threadfin salmon and mangrove jack along with bread and butter staples such as whiting, bream and flathead. All can be encountered throughout the vast maze of estuarine systems in the Great Sandy Strait and the Mary, Susan and Burrum River systems.

A short boat ride from the Urangan harbour and fishers can explore the many inshore islands surrounded by fringing reefs, rocky outcrops and one of the largest artificial reefs on the east coast.

With demersal species such as coral trout, sweetlip, blue parrot and snapper near the sea bottom and mixed pelagic species such as mackerel, tuna, trevally and queenfish near the surface, anglers are sure to find something that will put a bend in the rod.

A little further afield is Platypus Bay, famous for its incredible pelagic fishery with longtail tuna, golden trevally and juvenile black marlin being major drawcards for the area. It also boasts a huge list of possible bycatches such as mackerel, cobia, queenfish, snapper and nannygai.

It’s not only Humpback Whales that flock to the coast of Hervey Bay, these waters are brimming with big fish sure to keep even the most experienced anglers on top of their game. The coast of Fraser Island is also known for its shallow shoals and numerous shipwrecks, which will serve you with an artificial reef.

For the adventurers and mad keen fishos, Breaksea Spit and beyond on the eastern side of Fraser provides numerous options for anglers including bottom fishing for red emperor, surface fishing for Spanish mackerel and game fishing for marlin.

Fraser Island is now on the map as one of the best blue marlin fisheries in Australia with the possibly of also catching a black marlin and striped marlin, securing the prized slam of all three species.

If saltwater isn’t appealing, explore the sweetwater scene at Lake Lenthall, a short drive out of town. Become immersed in its beautiful waterways and the opportunity to tangle with barramundi, bass and yellowbelly.
