You begin your Jellurgal trek with a live Aboriginal Dance Performance and ochre anointment on the beach at Burleigh Cove, performed by members of the local Yugambeh tribe. Visit the midden and other significant Aboriginal sites along the way. The Jellurgal trek takes 45 minutes but there is an option to return to the Centre at the Midden, 15 minutes into the Tour.
The Jellurgal Dreaming tour includes lunch and refreshments at Jingi Cafe, located at the Centre.
Participants are guided to Burleigh Cove to begin their trek around the Dreaming Mountain, Jellurgal, with an ochre anointment. This important ancient ceremony is conducted by the local Yugambeh people who will bless you with a safe journey.
During the trek around the mountain, participants will discover traditional sites used by the Yugambeh people, including an ancient midden and carving stone. Aspects of traditional life, including the sharing of one of the Gold Coast's oldest Dreamtime Stories, 'The creation of Jellurgal', is a highlight.
The Jellurgal trek takes 1 hour 15 minutes but there is an option to return to the Centre at the Midden, 15 minutes into the Tour.
Your morning begins at Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre at 11.30am with a live Aboriginal Dance performance after which you begin your Jellurgal trek with an ancient smoking ceremony and ochre anointment on the beach at Burleigh Cove, performed by members of the local Yugambeh tribe. Designed for international travellers, interstate visitors and locals wishing to learn more about the Aboriginal history of their region, Welcome to Yugambeh Country is a exclusive two and a half to three hour private tour incorporating three sites: Kombumerri Park (Aboriginal burial ground at Merrimac), Jebbribillum Bora (the Bora Ring at Burleigh Heads) and a half hour walk around Jellurgal (Burleigh Headland) for up to seven people.
The exclusive private guided tour includes informative commentary about the history and culture of the Yugambeh people, narrated by an experienced and knowledgeable local Aboriginal guide. Commentary will cover stories and legends pertaining to the areas visited, ecological practices of Aborigines, cultural awareness and cross-cultural sensitivity, and the relevance of native flora and fauna to local Aborigines who inhabited the area thousands of years ago.
