Bird watching in Queensland: Bird is the Word

If you think you know your hooters from your boobies, think again (yes, we are talking about Australian birds)! Over 600 species of birds call Queensland home, but our favourites have the biggest personalities!

The Southern Cassowary leads a solitary existence in the Wet Tropics from Cardwell to Cape York. These large flightless birds can grow up to 2 meters in height (which doesn’t make them any easier to spot) and are vital to the survival of the rainforest thanks to their effective seed planting technique!  They are very shy and sometimes hard to spot in the wild, but keep an eye out for their bright blue neck and red features - oh and the horn-like helmut on their heads that helps . The islands and cays of the Great Barrier Reef is where you’ll find Booby birds diving head first into the reef chasing colourful fish with their other sea-feathered friends including the Terns, Noddies and Frigate birds.  You can find all sorts of birds up the coast from Moreton and Stradbroke Islands right up until the islands in the Torres Strait.

From coast to rainforest and outback beyond, the type of flock will change but if you stay still you might be lucky enough to spot an Albert’s Lyrebird, Buff-Breasted Kingfisher, Golden Bowerbird, emus, wild lorikeets or the Palm Cockatoo.

Oh, squawking of cockatoos, these guys are quite cocky and have been known to pinch bikinis from resort balconies!
