Take a flight to Keswick Island, 32 kilometres off the coast of Mackay. Walk through the island’s seemingly untouched tropical forests, to a secluded beach for a romantic picnic. Spend the afternoon lazing on the warm sand, and taking refreshing dips to snorkel the colourful fringing coral.

Enjoy a glass of wine on the deck of your accommodation, watching the sun set over the mainland. Glamping is a fun accommodation option here too! Enjoy a blissful night’s sleep, listening to the calming ocean.

Keswick Island to Cape Hillsborough

After your night at Keswick take the cruise back to Mackay Harbour and enjoy the possibility of whale sightings during migration season, as well as turtles and dolphins gliding through the water.

Enjoy a waterfront lunch at one of many fine eateries ranging from seafood and Asian cuisine, bistros and cafes. Then enjoy a fine stroll along the vibrant Mackay Marina Village, a palm-lined waterfront esplanade.

Next, take a drive toward Cape Hillsborough, allowing approximately three hours for the journey if you include attraction stops along the way. Stop at a grocery store for your evening dinner supplies before leaving Mackay.

Cape Hillsborough to Casuarina Beach

Enjoy afternoon tea at what was the old Marian Train Station, which has been relocated, transformed into a tea house and is set amongst beautiful tropical gardens and parkland.

Before you settle in at Cape Hillsborough for the evening, enjoy a romantic stroll along Casuarina Beach also known as Cape Hillsborough Beach.

Casuarina Beach to Wedge Island

Wake up early and view the sun rising from behind the ocean at Casuarina Beach, and enjoy a truly Australian sight as wallabies and kangaroos feast and play in the morning tide.

Explore nearby walking tracks to view a plethora of colourful birds and butterflies, including the vividly blue Ulysses butterfly. As the tide falls, walk the exposed low tide causeway to Wedge Island, and enjoy the serenity of Wedge Island beach. Be sure to cross the causeway before the tide comes back in.

Enjoy another tranquil evening amongst the beauty of nature in Cape Hillsborough National Park.
