RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre

Anyone interested in aviation or military history will be in high spirits at the RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre near Ipswich. Housed in hangars at the RAAF base at Amberley, Australia’s largest operating airbase, the centre has plenty of displays that showcase the history of the RAAF and its crucial role to the country and local community.

How’s this for starters? You can walk around and get up close to a WWII Boston Bomber, Vietnam-era Canberra bomber, Caribou airlifter, Sioux and Iroquois helicopters, and WWII Jeeps. There are also Sabre and Mirage fighter jets, and perhaps most exciting, you can sit in the cockpit of an F-111.

The museum focuses on the RAAF’s important role in South-East Queensland in both war and peace times, with exhibits of medals, armaments, aircraft modules and engines, and more. Reservists and volunteers act as friendly guides so you can feel free to ask them anything. There’s a small café plus souvenir and gift shop selling model planes, DVDs, books and clothing.

The centre is open only every third Sunday of the month. For school and Community groups, by prior arrangement, the centre is open Tuesday and Thursday between 9am and 3pm.

This popular park features a deep crater lake surrounded by cool lush rainforest. Lake Barrine, part of Crater Lakes National Park, is a maar—a crater lake formed by two massive volcanic explosions. Take the short stroll to the giant bull kauri trees or stretch your legs on the longer 5km track around the lake.

Zillie Falls

Zillie Falls are spectacular falls located on the Waterfalls Circuit with Millaa Millaa and Ellinjaa Falls. There is a lovely viewing platform at the base of the falls where you can enjoy a view of the cascading water and rapids.

Pepina Falls

Pepina Falls are best viewed in the time just after the "Green Season". The "Green Season" sometimes known as the wet season runs from January to the end of April most years. Located in a little seen area off the Old Palmerston Highway (the scenic route between Millaa Millaa and Ravenshoe) on Maalan Road they certainly provide a photographic opportunity.

Millstream Falls

Millstream Falls is reputedly Australia's widest single-drop waterfall. The falls flow over the edge of a columnar basalt lava flow, a legacy of the Atherton Tableland's volcanic past. Millstream Falls National Park is on the western edge of the World Heritage Area.

Ravenshoe, the highest town in Queensland at 920 metres, is a lush region of mountain pastures and un-spoiled World Heritage rainforest. Situated five kilometres from Ravenshoe you will find windmills that are 45 metres freestanding and twenty of them together is a spectacular sight to behold and feed enough power to into the national grid to power 3,500 homes.

Josephine Creek starts as a gentle trickle high on the south-east side of the summit of Queensland's highest mountain, Bartle Frere. By the time it has travelled the 7.5 kilometres to the smooth granite boulders of Josephine Falls, it is a thundering torrent that will take your breath away.
