Riversleigh Fossil Sites

Fossils showing the evolution of Australia’s mammals are forever preserved in limestone at the Riversleigh Fossil Sites in Outback Queensland. This World Heritage-listed site is located in the south-eastern section of Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park, with fossils dating back 25 million years.

Things to do at Riversleigh

See the fossils in-situ at Riversleigh D Site - the only section of the site open to the public. Walk the Riversleigh Fossil Trail to take you to the top of the limestone outcrop overlooking Riversleigh D site. Visit the Riversleigh Fossil Centre in Mount Isa to see the palaeontologists work on piecing back together the story of these mammal fossils. And explore the landscape of Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park where its sandstone formations, gorges and waterholes have been formed over millions of years.

The Muttaburrasaurus Langdoni Replica is a life sized statue of a prehistoric Dinosaur located in the RSL Park in Muttaburra. The fossilised skeleton of the first Muttaburrasaurus was found by local grazier Doug Langdon while mustering on a property in Muttaburra.
