Art and Cultural Events

In Queensland we celebrate all art forms, from theatrical to sculptural and fashion. We also see world-class touring exhibitions and shows at our museums, performing arts centres, local theatres and other venues. Check out the following events for your arts and culture fix.

Cultural Heart of Brisbane

South Bank in Brisbane has grown into the cultural heart of Queensland with the Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Museum and Queensland Performing Arts Centre all within metres of each other. The precinct also includes the renowned Streets Beach, cafes, restaurants and weekend markets.

Queensland Art Galleries and Museums

From fashion exhibitions to interactive displays and historical artefacts, you’ll find art, history and culture in galleries and museums across the state. Be sure to visit these places for upcoming exhibitions and shows:

  • The South Bank Cultural Precinct (Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Museum)
  • The Arts Centre Gold Coast
  • The Janbal Gallery in Mossman showcasing Indigenous artwork

Musicals and Theatre

The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane is the primary venue for touring musical and theatrical productions. With four stages; Lyric Theatre, Playhouse, Cremorne Theatre and Concert Hall, QPAC regularly hosts plays, the ballet, opera and broadway shows all year round. Other performing arts centres include:

  • The Powerhouse in Brisbane
  • The Arts Centre Gold Coast
  • The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley

Margaret Olley: A Generous Life

‘A Generous Life’ examines the legacy and influence of the much-loved Australian artist, Margaret Olley (1923–2011) who spent a formative part of her career in Brisbane. A charismatic character who exerted a lasting impact on many artists as a mentor and friend over several decades was also a muse for artists from William Dobell to Jeffrey Smart.

Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival

Jumpers and Jazz is an annual festival that occurs in Warwick, on Queensland’s Southern Downs. It is traditionally held over 10 days at the end of July. The festival was born out of a desire to create a positive community response to a major streetscape project in 2004.

Australian Festival of Chamber Music

Port Douglas Carnivale - Celebrating 25 Years

1770 Festival
