Barramundi to Trevally – A Seaforth Fishing Adventure

Multiple Locations

Avid anglers love fishing in Seaforth and this trail gives an opportunity to catch a variety of fish. You’ll definitely need a boat to complete this fishing adventure. If you're fishing for barramundi, their season closes from midday November 1 to midday February 1.

Start in Victoria Creek where you’ll fish for barramundi and salmon along the creek’s edges. Continue casting along the mud-flats until you reach Cluny Creek. The trail then takes you out to a cluster of tropical islands where your starting point is Newry Island. There you can fish, troll or snorkel around the islands. These outer islands are within the Conservation Park (Yellow) Zone which limits anglers to one hand-held rod or one hand-held line per person, with only one hook attached to the line.

Please note: you're not guaranteed to catch a fish following this trail alone. Great fishermen know to do their own research beforehand.

After a day out, your trip back to the ramp will be memorable. You’ll pass through the tropical paradise of Mausoleum Island, Rocky Island and Acacia Island. These are beautiful islands to look at, however please don't fish around them as they're protected by a Green Zone.

Port Newry Boat Ramp to Victoria Creek Mouth

Get started by launching your boat at the Port Newry Boat Ramp. It’s a four-lane boat ramp, complete with a waiting pontoon for easy collection of any passengers you’re taking with you. And you can have a final toilet stop at the ramp before you head off.

Once your boat is in the water, perform the necessary safety and equipment checks and then you’re ready to head out about five minutes to the mouth of Victoria Creek where you can cast for barramundi and salmon along the river’s edge. This little spot is best at low or outgoing tide.

Victoria Creek Mouth to Cluny Creek Mouth

To broaden your casting area, slowly venture north of Victoria Creek until you reach the mouth of Cluny Creek. Cast along the way to increase your chance of hooking into a barramundi or salmon. Once you’re at the mouth of Cluny Creek, you can also fish for whiting or flathead.

This location is great at low or outgoing tide. Be careful navigating over shallow areas and in and out of the creeks.

Cluny Creek Mouth to Newry Island

After casting for barramundi and salmon off the creeks, head out to sea for reef fishing and trolling. Make your way towards Newry Island. Beyond the northern point you’ll find great conditions for trolling and casting. If you’re fishing in winter, keep an eye out for schools of bait for your opportunity to chase big fish like mackerel and queenfish.

Using live squid and prawn bait, you can anchor up and fish for some reef fish species including tusk fish and coral trout. Alternatively, you can venture around the islands, take in the sights and find the right fishing spot for you and your preferred method.
