Cape Hillsborough and the Hibiscus Coast

The Hibiscus Coast guarantees wildlife encounters on the uncrowded beaches of Seaforth, Halliday Bay, Ball Bay and Cape Hillsborough, starting 20 kilometres north of Mackay.

How to get to Hibiscus Coast

This drive is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque stretches of the 1652km-long Bruce Highway, with verdant sugar cane country on either side of the bitumen.

The towering cane fields somehow manage to make this drive feel more like a rural country drive than a national highway, which is good news for people who prefer the road less travelled.

Where to stay on the Hibiscus Coast

Nature is definitely guaranteed when you stay along the Hibiscus Coast. If you want to be close to the action (and the local wallabies), the Cape Hillsborough Nature Resort offers beach side accommodation and facilities. For those who want to get back to basics, pitch a tent and camp on a remote island in Newry Islands National Park. Or, if you're craving something a bit more luxe, flock to The Featured Nest, a 5-star wildlife retreat in Kuttabul.

Cape Hillsborough

Cape Hillsborough National Park is where the rainforest meets the coastal water of the Coral Sea, with a beautiful beach shared with the local wallabies, scenic nature walks and spectacular views. Rise early to watch families of wallabies and kangaroos take to the the beach at sunrise within the Cape Hillsborough National Park or enjoy a moonlight stroll, along with thousands of scurrying crabs. At low tide you can walk from the Cape Hillsborough beach to the Wedge Island Reef via a causeway, a popular snorkelling destination.
