Camping in the Carnarvon Gorge day-use area is only permitted during the Easter, winter and spring Queensland school holidays. Big Bend camping area, reached by a 9.7 kilometre walk, is open all year. Remote camping in other areas of the park is also available.

Camping permits are required and fees apply. A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your campsite.

Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Area

Only available at select times throughout the year, Carnarvon Gorge visitor area in the Carnarvon National Park Camping Ground is a picturesque, semi secluded camping area. There are 35 sites located on a grass surface under a canopy of Carnarvon fan palms and gums with excellent facilities also suitable for wheelchair access.

Big Bend Camping Area

Reachable only by walking, the Big Bend camping area in the Carnarvon National Park Camping Ground offers a tranquil escape. Set on the backdrop of sheer cliffs the open area caters for a maximum of 10 campers at a time ensuring a peaceful, relaxing and back to basics camping experience. Please remember to bring everything with you on foot!

The Summer Solstice Light Spectacle, a dazzling light display, is a natural phenomenon unique in the southern hemisphere. It occurs throughout December and early January. Due to the alignment of the sun over the Tropic of Capricorn brilliant direct sun light penetrates the darkness of the Belfry Cave through a 14 metre vertical shaft in the cave roof at midday.
