The distinctive peaks of Rising dramatically above the surrounding grazing and farmlands, mounts Barney, Maroon, May, Ernest, Ballow and Clunie form this hiking mecca. Feel sheltered beneath tall spreading eucalypts and brush box trees on the grassy slopes, rising into subtropical rainforest and wet mallee forest—home of the endangered Coxen’s fig-parrot and vulnerable plumed frogmouth.

If you're not the adventurous, mountain-climbing type, pack a picnic lunch and head off on the 7.4 kilometre Lower Portals track. From the car park, climb to the Lower Portals, a beautiful pool along a gorge on Mount Barney Creek. Sit quietly beside the crystal-clear creek and keep an eye out for the tell-tale bubbles of a platypus.
