Burdekin

Curious about what sugar and shipwrecks have in common? You can find them both in The Burdekin — about an hour’s drive south of Townsville.

Things to do in Burdekin

Come face-to-face with manta rays, bull sharks, turtles and barracudas when you dive one of the largest intact shipwrecks and top 10 dive sites in the world – the century-old SS Yongala. Go for a dip at Alva Beach and cast a line to catch yourself a fresh flathead for dinner, or test your water skills with a stand-up paddle or kiteboarding lesson. Walk one of Australia’s longest multi-span bridges that joins Burdekin’s sweetest towns — Ayr and Home Hill — famous for their sugar cane, mango and melon crops. Or, back a winner at the Burdekin Growers Race Day, held in May each year and go home with a free box of fresh produce.
