Bribie Island, about an hour's drive from Brisbane is a treasure trove of plants and animals. The island is fringed by sandy beaches and sand dunes. Heaths, paperbark wetlands and freshwater creeks and lagoons, along with open forests are home to varied birdlife.

Tidal wetlands and waters around Bribie Island are part of Moreton Bay Marine Park. Fish, crabs and prawns breed in nearby Pumicestone Passage and dugong feed on its seagrass communities. Thousands of shorebirds feed and roost here, making great birdwatching opportunities.

Explore the easy Bicentennial walking tracks. Go boating or paddle a kayak around Pumicestone Passage. Try your luck at fishing or crabbing. Picnic at Lighthouse Reach or Lions Park. Pitch a tent at Mission Point, or in one of three other camping areas that are accessible only by four-wheel drive.

Crystal clear springs add more than ten million litres of water a day to peaceful Louisa Creek and the Nogoa River as they meander beneath a backdrop of rocky sandstone crags and spires. Named by explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1846, Salvator Rosa is at the western edge of the Central Queensland Sandstone Belt.

Emerald

How did Emerald get its name? It's thanks to a lush green hill - emerald in colour - located just north of the town called 'Emerald Downs Hill'. Established in 1879, this large country town has become the hub of the Central Highlands and gateway to one of the largest sapphire fields in the southern hemisphere.

Rolleston is in the southeast of Queensland's Central Highlands and is the nearest town to the world renowned Carnarvon Gorge and Carnarvon National Park. Rolleston is 70 kilometres east of Springsure and can be reached by travelling along the Great Inland Way.

Willows Gemfields is 11 kilometres off the Capricorn Highway, 24 kilometres past the Anakie/Sapphire crossroads and about 45 minutes' drive west of Emerald. The Willows Gemfields is a popular fossicking spot, as very little machinery and no corporate mining has been permitted in the past.

Stubby Bend

On the banks of the Barcoo River away from the highway noise, Stubby Bend offers fully self-contained travellers a free site for camping. A variety of birds visit the area throughout the day, you can watch the kangaroos grazing in the afternoons, and quite often at night friendly possums will visit your camp site.
