Come visit Gurulmundi – one of southern Queensland’s most botanically significant areas. This renowned wildflower hotspot contains over 200 species of plants – all jam-packed on the crest of the Great Dividing Range. With Boobook’s Botanist, you will see a striking array of wildflowers including grevilleas, hakeas, wattles, bush peas, boronias, melaleucas, kunzeas, daisies and grass trees. This is also one of the very few places in Queensland to see the threatened Gurulmundi Heath-myrtle, Gurulmundi Fringe-myrtle and Curran’s Wattle.
Take as much time as you like to admire the floral displays while learning about each species from your expert guide. See plants such as tiny ground orchids that you might otherwise miss. Apart from wildflowers there are numerous other fascinating plants including spinifex, spotted gums, budgeroo and hairy oaks.
Tour is easy-paced and can be tailored to group needs and interests. Take short walks which may include some uneven ground, long grass and areas with dense shrubs. Longer walks and visits to adjoining Stones Country Regional Park can be arranged upon request. Tours leaving Roma and travelling to Gurulmundi involve approximately a 1.5 hour drive. All tours are weather dependent.
Contribute to scientific knowledge by joining BOOBOOK’s Eco-Science Expeditions. Working alongside Australian expert ecologists you will be actively participating in ecological surveys, gain hands on experience and contribute to Australian flora and fauna research, including threatened species.
This rare and special opportunity, spending five days in unstudied and biologically rich environments working with expert ecologists willing to share their knowledge, is a chance of a lifetime.
BOOBOOK’s ecologists Craig and Richard have been likened to “Harry Butler” or “David Attenborough” – their depth of knowledge and understanding of this environment and all that lives here is out of this world. They are fabulous mentors and great communicators to boot.
During the expedition you will participate in field surveys, exploration walks and wildlife searches in exciting and diverse areas of Outback Queensland to document flora and fauna.
Use special techniques to identify birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and a range of invertebrate groups; help to collect, press and identify plant specimens; plus navigate with GPS and other devices to collect and record valuable ecological data ready for incorporation into databases and reports.
Our eco-science expeditions are conducted out of base camps with varying accommodation and facilities. No two trips are the same!
