Burrum Coast and Great Sandy Strait

The sheltered waters of the Great Sandy Strait between Fraser Island and Hervey Bay, are a natural playground for humpback whales. On land, wildflowers and secluded beaches beckon from Burrum Coast National Park.

Angling mecca

  • Go fishing and hook mackerel straight off the beach at the southern mouth of the Burrum River or canoe through intricate channels and mangrove-lined rivers in search of mud crabs.
  • Launch from Tiaro's Petrie Park into the Mary River to fish for bass, barramundi and catfish.
  • Reel in buckets full of fish from the sleepy shores of Boonooroo and Tuan.

Outdoor thrills

  • Be at one with the wilderness at Burrum Point campground or pitch a tent behind the dunes at Kinkuna.
  • Explore the walking tracks of Vine Forest Reserve or have a picnic by the Arkarra Lagoons and Tea Gardens.
  • Spot rare shorebirds in Great Sandy Conservation Park or migratory whales from a coastal lookout.
