Bundaberg | Things to do

Get ready to relax in Bundy (as the local’s call it). This family-friendly region marks the start of the Southern Great Barrier Reef with undiscovered islands offshore and nesting turtles at Mon Repos on the mainland. Plus, if you’re of age, you can take a sip of an Australian favourite at the Bundaberg Rum Distillery.

Turtles

The Mon Repos Conservation Park, in Bargara, north-east of Bundaberg, is one of Australia’s most important turtle breeding sites. See these endangered creatures come ashore to nest on the beaches from November to January, then watch as the babies hatch and make their way to the sea from February to March.

Southern Great Barrier Reef

The Southern Great Barrier Reef begins in the clear waters off Bundaberg. Go off the grid at Lady Elliot Island, a remote coral cay with a single eco-friendly resort focused on conservation. Swim with manta rays and turtles that visit the calm waters or learn to scuba dive at one of the island’s 20 dive sites.

Farm to Table

Bundaberg’s rich red soil and sunny skies make for a foodie paradise. Sample famous Bundaberg Rum and Ginger Beer at the local distillery and brewery, and eat your fill of fresh oysters, crab, scallops and fish from the local fishing boats. Sample a huge selection of goodies at the weekly RiverFeast Markets, or time your visit to attend the Bundy Flavours and Winterfeast Farmers Market in July.
