Open Cut Coal Mines in Ipswich region – the Facts

New Chum, Ipswich Area

24 June 2018 -

Indicative Rate * AU$5.00 to AU$7.00

New Hope is a majority Australian-owned and controlled local coal mining company which is based in, and began operations in, the Ipswich area in 1952. The company has owned and operated underground mines in the Swanbank area but closed its last underground mine in 1998.

Since then New Hope has operated only open cut mines. The company’s last operating site in the West Moreton basin is at Jeebropilly, near Amberley, which is scheduled to close by the end of 2019.

This presentation by Ross Bennet will provide an overview of historical open cut operations at Chuwar, Rosewood and Jeebropilly. Ross has been with New Hope since 2006, starting as an environmental officer with responsibility for the West Moreton mines. He then moved into a mine closure planning role. In 2015 he became the land and tenures manager, overseeing approximately 80 tenements over almost 20,000ha throughout Queensland.
