DAY ONE: First stop - Texas Railway Museum to Inglewood Railway Station

Mode of Travel:

Car, Caravan, Coach, Motorcycle

Route Type:

One way

All aboard for a self-drive tour of significant railway sites. First stop – the Texas Railway Museum. Here you'll find traditional, restored trains and wagons, station platforms, railway sleepers and railway tracks.

After visiting the Texas Railway Museum, head out along the Inglewood-Texas Rd towards Inglewood, to the Inglewood Railway Station. The Inglewood station building was built in 1911.

DAY ONE: Next stop - Inglewood to Yelarbon

Mode of Travel:

4x4, Car, Caravan, Coach

Route Type:

One way

The Railway Bridge over Macintyre Brook at Inglewood is another piece of significant railway architecture. At 89 metres in length, it's predominately made up of recycled pieces from other bridges – the main span was originally part of a bridge that spanned Countess Street in Brisbane, while eight fish belly plate girders were most likely part of the Breakfast Creek bridge that was replaced in 1902.

Head East toward Yelarbon.

Lunch at the Oasis Hotel in Yelarbon is a must for any rail enthusiast.

No trip to Yelarbon is complete without a quick photo opportunity with the Yelarbon Silos, and a stop at the Yelarbon Recreation Grounds Railway Museum. Entry is free to the museum; however, a gold coin donation is appreciated.

DAY ONE: Yelarbon to Goondiwindi

Mode of Travel:

4x4, Bus, Car, Caravan, Coach

Route Type:

One way

Once you've had your silo selfies and a yummy lunch at the Oasis Hotel in Yelarbon, head west along the Cunningham Highway toward Goondiwindi, a short half hour drive passing by the paddocks and crops toward your final destination for Day One. Book into your accommodation and settle in for the night, ready for Day Two!

DAY TWO: Goondiwindi - Talwood

Mode of Travel:

4x4, Bus, Car, Caravan, Coach

Route Type:

One way

After a hearty breakfast at one of Goondiwindi's cafés, follow the rail west to your first station of the day, the Toobeah Railway Station. The original station was built in 1913, however the small timber building you can see today was relocated from Passmore near Stanthorpe in 1964 when the original burnt down.

Continue your journey westward, through the railway village of Bungunya. Like many other rural towns, the Bungunya railway station has closed due to improved transport services.

The last stop on our train journey is the Talwood Train Station – the original railway station building can be found at the Talwood Recreation Grounds. Before you continue along to the Balonne Region, call into the Talwood Pub for a scrumptious counter meal, or if caravanning/camping, set up camp at the Talwood Recreation Grounds for camping at the cost of a donation.
