The Rosewood Railway

Ashwell, Scenic Rim Area

Rosewood, tucked away in the Bremer valley just west of Ipswich, is home to The Rosewood Railway. Seeking to recreate the atmosphere of a typical Queensland branch line of the 1950s and 60s (steam and early Diesel era), the Rosewood Railway offers rides on Red Fred, a restored 1930 Railmotor and trailer. The C17 steam locomotive is currently under repair and will return to hauling restored wooden carriages in mid to late 2019.

The line is high in the hills above Rosewood giving a spectacular view of the valley and the Scenic Rim. There are plenty of steep grades where the railmotor has to work hard. The Rosewood Railway, part of the Australian Railway Historical Society Queensland Division, also has an extensive collection of restored carriages, wagons and lamps on display.

Trains run on the last Sunday of each month hourly from Cabanda Station from 10am to 2pm, and 9.30am to 1.30pm from Kunkala Station where souvenirs, refreshments and picnic tables are available. The Rosewood Railway is open as a static display on the other Sundays of each month. Rides in a fully restored inspection railmotor will be available from March 2018. The restoration was funded by Ipswich City Council.
