Explore the back roads, cruise past surf beaches and discover the beauty of the Noosa River Everglades. This drive will take you through some of the Sunshine Coast's most iconic towns before heading to Maryborough, Hervey Bay and on to your final destination, the magnificent Fraser Island.
The majority of the roads on this drive are sealed which means it's an adventure suitable for cars as well as four wheel drive vehicles however there are a few rough patches along the way so be sure to check conditions before you set off.
Wild Horse Mountain Lookout can be found 30 kilometres north of Brisbane, just off the Bruce Highway and is well worth checking out. You'll have to walk a little to get to the lookout but you won't be disappointed with the 360 degree panoramic views at the top.
Explore the Sunshine Coast towns of Caloundra, Maroochydore and Noosa - where you can find great food, beautiful beaches and lots of activities for the family. For some peace and quiet, drive to Boreen Point on the Noosa River, where you can hire a kayak or windsurf to enjoy Lake Cootharaba with all its birdlife. From Boreen Point turn off to Elanda Point and enjoy a picturesque drive to Wolvi, then north east towards the towns of Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach.
On your way to the river-port city of Maryborough you'll have a chance to stop in the quaint fishing villages of Poona, Maaroom, Boonooroo and Tuan. Then cruise north to Hervey Bay - best known as the place there the whales 'come to play'. The town has a great selection of accommodation as well as beachside cafes, restaurants and gift shops.
It's then just a short drive to River Heads to catch the ferry to the unique World Heritage listed Fraser Island.
