Fraser Coast Amazing Fishing Trails

Hervey Bay, Fraser Coast Area

Fraser Coast is among the world's best destinations for life-changing, world class fishing experiences. Kilometres of peaceful north facing beaches, protected by prevailing winds from Fraser Island, stretch from Burrum Heads to Poona. National parks nestle into much of the shoreline of the Great Sandy Strait, making fishing one of the most popular activities of the region. Whiting on the beaches, creeks and rivers to red emperor on the off shore reefs, or marlin and sailfish for the big game enthusiasts around the top of Fraser Island. Fraser Coast offers every type of fishing experience that most anglers only dream of.

Recreational fishers describes Fraser Island as the holy grail of beach fishing, while Fraser Island flats have been well documented by Australia's leading saltwater fly fishers as being the best the world has to offer. Fly fishers come from all over the world to cast on the flat, sandy shallows near the island for milk fish and the chance to snag the highly sought golden trevally.

The Great Sandy Strait is a maze of sandy channels and deep snag ridden holes that hide almost every fish imaginable. Green zones exist to protect the turtles and dugongs, both of which are plentiful in the area. Mangrove lined creeks or the sheltered waters are ideal for exploring with a small motorboat or kayak.

Varieties include coral trout, bream, whiting, flathead, mackerel, tailor and mangrove jack, along with sand and mud crabs. Fishing from the iconic Urangan Pier or Torquay and Scarness jetties are a favourite with both young and old. Here you can catch it in the morning and have it on the plate by evening.

Then there is the fantastic fishing on Lake Lenthall's Dam, officially stocked with Bass, barramundi, Yellow-belly and Silver Perch. Lent halls is a pretty lake surrounded by tea tree scrub, fringed with water lilies and weed beds. You can camp here and permits are available online or at the nearby service station a few kilometres north of the turn off on the Bruce Highway.
