Epic Cape York

Cairns, Cairns Area

Rich with Aboriginal culture and Australian pioneering history, Cape York is an untamed wilderness area waiting to be explored. The journey through Cape York Peninsula to the top of Australia is an epic adventure taking in memorable pubs, ancient rock art and spectacular natural scenery.

Start in historic Cooktown which was discovered by Captain James Cook when the HMS Endeavour hit a reef in 1770. Monuments and museums with carefully preserved relics are reminders of the town's rich history, while the well-maintained cemetery bears testament to the hardships endured more than a century ago.

Join the Peninsula Development Road at Lakeland and travel to Laura to see the Quinkan rock art galleries, the site of the world's largest body of prehistoric rock art and one of UNESCO's top 10 rare rock art sites in the world.

The bitumen ends as you head further north past Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, famous for its fishing and wildlife including crocodiles and birds which depend on its many waterholes and rivers. Stop at Musgrave Roadhouse which was first built as an overland telegraph station in 1887. It has one of the few remaining telegraph poles in Cape York.

Discover more about Cape York's history in the township of Coen before driving through Oyala Thumotang National Park where you will find the scenic waterholes of the Archer River. Turn off to Weipa to see the world's largest bauxite deposit before continuing north to Bramwell Junction to access the Bypass roads which lead to the ferry at Jardine River. Or take the more adventurous Old Telegraph Line which includes the beautiful swimming spots of Fruit Bat Falls, Eliot Falls and Twin Falls.

From the ferry head to the Torres Strait Islander community of Bamaga, then it is 32 kilometres and a short walk to the northern most point of Australia. Standing at The Tip you can see the Torres Strait islands which can be accessed by boat from Seisia.

Explore the historic Somerset ruins, visit World War 2 sites, walk long stretches of deserted beaches or explore the Lockerbie Scrub rainforest trail at The Tip.
