Wirrarri Visitor Information Centre

Birdsville, Diamantina Area

Outback folk are renowned for getting their bearings at The Wirrarri Visitor Centre - a traveller's first point of call when entering famed Birdsville.

The Centre prides itself on promoting Australia’s ‘must see’ town and offering relevant tourist information with a friendly Outback yarn. Be sure to say g’day to local artist and Aboriginal elder Jean Barr behind the desk, view her exhibition and learn about her family who have lived in the desert for thousands of years.

For those requiring modern cons, the Centre also incorporates a library and gallery with wifi access and is equipped with an office area to service the needs of visiting professionals (though who really wants to work when on holidays?).

Best of all, the Centre is all within walking distance to the famous Birdsville Hotel, the scrumptious Birdsville Bakery, roadhouse, general store, post office and caravan park. What more could you want?

Relax and soak up the true blue atmosphere, or sit up at the bar to hear a few yarns from old drovers, ringers and friendly locals. In the first week of September the population swells from 100 to over 5,000 for the Birdsville Races. This legendary race has been run on a sandy track since 1882 and now boasts professionally trained racehorses and prize money of over AUD100,000.00.
