Townsville was formally known as the twin cities, as Thuringowa was a city in its own right. During a state wide amalgamation process the cities were combined and Thuringowa became part of Townsville. It extends over an area of 4,000 square kilometres and it is an engine of new industry and development. Importantly, care has been taken to preserve natural attractions including parks and gardens along the banks of Ross River.
