Around 130 kilometres south-west of Townsville and 90 kilometres north-east of Charters Towers lies the township of Ravenswood. The old gold mining settlement, tucked away amongst the rolling hills, is a living tribute to the history and heritage of western Queensland. Mullock heaps, tall chimneys, poppet heads and discarded mine machinery pepper the countryside, reminiscent of the towns century-old glory.
Beautifully restored hotels and public buildings will give you a glimpse of what the town was once like. Take the time to stop and explore because there's more to this historic town of Ravenswood than you would expect and the locals are only too happy to tell you all about it.
Family history records are available at the Courthouse Museum which is open most days from 11:00am until 1:00pm.
