South Cumberland Islands National Park

St Bees Island, Mackay Area

South Cumberland Islands National Park encompasses nine islands. Rocky, rugged, hoop pine-dominated headlands stand out from open eucalypt woodland and extensive grasslands of the wind-exposed slopes. Protected coves shelter long, sandy beaches, while deep gullies hide remnants of dry rainforest.

Ringed by fringing reefs, many of the islands are important rookeries for flatback and green turtles.

Camp at Scawfell, St Bees, Cockermouth, Keswick or Penrith islands. Scawfell Island has basic facilities. Camping fees apply and bookings are essential. Book in advance for school holidays. Take water and a fuel stove. Check restrictions on activities such as spearfishing, anchoring, fishing and collecting.

Note: The National Park is open 24 hours however access via organised transfers will be available between 700 and 1700.

Keswick Island Cabins are located on Keswick Island, The Treasured Island which is located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The waters surrounding Keswick Island house the Reef with beautiful tropical fish, turtles and an abundance of marine life a snorkelling delight. The Cabins face the Egremont Passage providing a great location to watch the Humpback Whales passing through in August and September. A great location to sit and watch the whales when season. Their Keswick Island Store is open when they have guests (upon demand). They have ice creams, coffee, chips, lollies, cold drinks, snacks and souvenirs. The Treasured Island is a small island at the southern tip of the Whitsundays, 32 kilometres north east of Mackay. It boasts three sandy beaches each accessible on foot, great for fossicking or you can dive the wreck of the Cremer or the Singapore with ease. All the cabins have a fan, fridge, air conditioning and ensuite. There are two triple bunks, two twin bunks and eight king single beds. There are 12 rooms in total. Each room includes three meals for the day in their self-catered kitchen.
