The Gem Den

Mount Surprise, Etheridge Area

Free Entry

Mount Surprise Gems is Far North Queensland's only fossicking information hub. Here they hire or sell equipment to go fossicking with. There are seven areas within the region for a variety of minerals. The most popular field is O'Brien' s Creek just 40 kilometres from Mt Surprise where you can find Topaz, Aquamarine and Quartz's. They issue licences and give mud-maps to help you.

At the shop see how gems are cut and set. Have some fun with the 'stake a claim' pits or try your luck with a bucket of wash. They'll show you how. There's plenty for all the family to do.

The cafe is set amongst native gardens with giant games, and murals depicting the strong mining history of the region. Coffee is served from breakfast through to dinner with home made meals and treats always available. Plenty of jewellery, gifts and souvenirs are for sale.

Deep in the heart of the Gulf Savannah region in Far North Queensland is a hidden outback oasis - Cobbold Gorge. This Savannah Guide Station is located on a working cattle property and features a unique, narrow gorge set amid rugged sandstone formations with spectacular 30 metre cliffs that narrow to just two metres wide. To protect the fragile environment, access is by guided tour only. Cruise the gorge in an electric boat to explore the ancient geology with an expert guide - an awesome and unforgettable experience. Discover wildlife, go bushwalking or birdwatching, spot a crocodile and experience life on a cattle station. There is no need to rough it! Cobbold Gorge Village accommodation ranges from recently refurbished air-conditioned ensuite rooms to shady campsites. There are unpowered, powered and ensuite sites in the grassed camping area. McDonalds Deck provides snacks, meals and a licensed bar to relax and take in the peaceful atmosphere. The friendly staff and well-informed guides will help make your visit memorable.
