Fernvale, Somerset Area
Only an hour from downtown Brisbane, you'll find a spectacular setting to unwind in the peace and tranquility of a scenic water reserve. Lake Wivenhoe provides a focus for quiet and relaxed land and water-based recreation.
Leave behind anything that buzzes or barks; only non-fuel powered boats are permitted here and domestic animals are prohibited. Permits are available for camping, fishing and boating or simply pack a picnic and splash around in the fresh water.
Built in 1984, Wivenhoe Dam's primary function is to supply water for the region but it has also become a much-loved destination for campers, kayakers and all-around nature enthusiasts. The SEQWater Education Centre (on the Esk side of the dam wall) has many facilities including toilets, bus and car parking, shelter sheds, barbecues, interpretive displays, an information trail, lookout, conference centre and information sessions (bookings are essential). There are several places to stay around the lake including Cormorant Bay, Hamon Cove, Spillway Common, Logan Inlet, Captain Logan's Camp and Lumley Hill Camping Area.
