Celebrate 20 years of the iconic Maleny Wood Expo with three days of clean country family fun in the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Telling the whole timber story and designed to promote sustainable use of native timbers through the work of regional wood artisans, the Expo is now recognized as one of the best wood shows in Australia. All wood exhibitors are required to use sustainably harvested native timbers, weed or recycled timbers. Wander at leisure through lovingly crafted timber products, talk to the craftsmen and women who’ve created them, and visit the "Against the Grain" Wootha Prize exhibition. Glimpse the skills of the early timber-cutters, see the best in both hand-crafted traditional and high tech tools and smell the spicy aroma of newly milled timber. With live demonstrations of mobile milling, chainsaw carving, woodworking, trade tools and more, it really is “from chainsaw to fine furniture”. The whole family can get hands-on with WoodShed Workshops and even kids can join in at the Cool Stool School and take home their own masterpiece. Pull up a hay bale, enjoy great food and fabulous local music. Have a great day among the sawdust!

Mary River Festival

Multiple Locations
12 November 2016
The Mary River Festival, held each year in Kandanga in early November has acquired a reputation of being one of the friendliest, most laid back festivals you'd find, with a great mix of top music, art, kid's activities and much much more. This festival runs on a not for profit basis with an incredibly lean budget, through the generous involvement of local community groups, as well as a number of individuals, and enjoys wonderful support from musicians and participants. As well as the sense of community though, what really powers this festival is the exuberance unleashed in 2009, after Peter Garrett gave the federal thumbs-down on the Traveston Crossing Dam proposal. It was that enormous relief and the grabbing in both hands of the ongoing environmental stewardship of the Mary River that runs through every part of this festival.

Open Gardens Springtime in Montville is an opportunity to visit two of the best mature country gardens in Queensland, near the popular tourist town of Montville. The Shambles, at 85 Western Avenue, Montville, is a collectors garden established over the last 25 years around a century old farmhouse. Highlights will include many spring flowering shrubs, perennials, bulbs and orchids, and spectacular flowering trees. An extensive network of paths with no dead ends. Refreshments available at The Plough Inn. Proceeds from the Open Garden benefit the Cittamani Hospice service on the Sunshine Coast. The Shambles has opened in support of many charities since 2001. Wongawilli, at 19 Manley Drive, off Western Avenue, Montville, is another collectors garden commenced 16 years ago . Rowena, the garden's owner, describes having “phases of collecting plants" such as magnolias, wisterias, brugmansias, begonias and many more. A wide range of sub-tropical and temperate plants can be grown on the Range and are thriving in this garden. A difficult slope has been tamed with wide terraces and there are areas of woodland and revegetated gullies, a testament to the skill and horticultural knowledge of the owner. Proceeds from Wongawilli go to Fiji cyclone reconstruction relief.
