Celebrate 20 years of the iconic Maleny Wood Expo with three days of clean country family fun in the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Telling the whole timber story and designed to promote sustainable use of native timbers through the work of regional wood artisans, the Expo is now recognized as one of the best wood shows in Australia. All wood exhibitors are required to use sustainably harvested native timbers, weed or recycled timbers. Wander at leisure through lovingly crafted timber products, talk to the craftsmen and women who’ve created them, and visit the "Against the Grain" Wootha Prize exhibition. Glimpse the skills of the early timber-cutters, see the best in both hand-crafted traditional and high tech tools and smell the spicy aroma of newly milled timber. With live demonstrations of mobile milling, chainsaw carving, woodworking, trade tools and more, it really is “from chainsaw to fine furniture”. The whole family can get hands-on with WoodShed Workshops and even kids can join in at the Cool Stool School and take home their own masterpiece. This art course of drawing and sculpting will focus on the most popular symbols in Tibetan Buddhism – the Eight Auspicious Symbols. These eight symbols of good fortune represent the celestial offerings made by the Hindu gods to Buddha Shakyamuni after he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. By making such offerings, the gods acknowledged that his achievement was greater than theirs because he had truly left cyclic existence behind. The symbols are painted on doors and walls in preparation for New Year celebrations and are used as welcome signs at the entrance of monasteries when lamas and teachers visit. Lectures and meditations on the deeper symbolism of each symbol will enhance the experience of the sacred art. Every student will attempt to draw and sculpt in relief one of the symbols with clay (air-hardening clay) on a board. This course is suitable for both beginners and advanced students. Artistic talent is not required but genuine perseverance and interest are preferred. The end result is not as important as the path getting there. Held in the Arts Studio at Chenrezig Institute, accommodation and meals available separately. Meals must be booked before 9.30 am.
